Final decision on the 2013 Universiades to be taken in Brussels!

Representatives of Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA), the Government of Slovenia, Cities Maribor, Ruse and Zrece, University of Maribor, Olympic Committee of Slovenian and Sports centre Pohorje will tomorrow present the candidature of Maribor for the 26th Winter Universiade in 2013. The presentation will be held in front of the Executive Committee Members of the International University Sport Federation (FISU) which will give the final decision on the organisation of the Universiade. “We are well-prepared for the presentation. We believe that we will pass the last test successfully and that we will celebrate the positive decision of FISU Executive Board tomorrow,” said the President of SUSA prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik. The organisers of the 2013 universiades will be announced at the official ceremony at 8 PM, with live TV coverage.


The presentation of Maribor and partner cities will be done by a 10-member delegation, led by Slovenian minister for Education and Sport, dr, Milan Zver. The delegation has an hour to present the candidature for the 26th Winter Universiade in 2013 to the FISU Executive Board. Readiness of Maribor, Ruse and Zrece has already been positively marked by the Evaluation Committee which visited the venues in mid April. Members of the Evaluation Committee have especially been impressed by the approval and support of the entire local communities, institutions at local and national level, universities and students. The synergy effects of the Universiade, especially at the construction of sports infrastructure and tourist facilities were highly valued as well at a regional as well as national level.

Part of Slovenian delegation has already opened the information stand at a special exhibition where candidates for the Summer Universiade 2013 are also present: Kazan (Russia), Gwangju (Korea) and Vigo (Spain).

The presentations and announcements of the organiser of the Universiade take place in La Plaza Hotel, 118-126 Boulevard Adolphe Max in Brussels. Slovenian presentation is scheduled from 8.30 to 10.30 AM, and the announcement from 8 PM onwards. After the announcement and attribution, a big party will be held in Slovenian house in Brussels.
